Ken starred at Bridgton High School, averaging 29.5 points per game as a senior in 1962, and was selected Third Team BDN All State. He accepted a full scholarship to the University of Connecticut where he played from 1962-66, and was a member of the first team from New England to advance to the Elite Eight during the 64 season. After coaching for three years in Connecticut, he returned home and coached both Bridgton Academy and Lake Region HS, winning the 1985 Class B Gold Ball with the Lakers.
