Upon graduating from Stearns High School, Gus became a four year letterman for the University of Maine Black Bears from 1953-56, and he served as captain for both the basketball and baseball teams his senior year. A forty year career in education followed, the last thirty of which included positions as both girls and boys basketball coach, athletic director, and teacher at Lawrence High School. He is an inductee of the Maine Sports, Lawrence High School, and New England Basketball Hall of Fames.
