Gavin Kane

It is hard to imagine a more successful coaching career than that of Gavin Kane. The list of accomplishments is long, but the hundreds of relationships he has formed with his players is the true testament to Coach Kane’s impact beyond the basketball court. The loyalty of his players and the lifelong relationships formed in the pursuit of excellence are this Hall of Fame coach’s indelible mark. 

Gavin’s run of success at Dirigo High School in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s is legendary. His teams won a state record 12 Western Maine Championships and seven Gold Balls; the first in 1989 with the Rangeley High School boys, the others with the Dirigo High School girls in 1996,1998,2000,2002,2003,2005. In the process, Kane’s team won twelve consecutive Mountain Valley Conference Championships, and an amazing 136 consecutive victories! 

That’s over six seasons without a loss!

The Wilton native has also spent coaching stints at UMF with Hall of Fame coach Dick Meader,  ( 94-96 ) and at UMO ( 2009-2011 ). He also brought his winning ways to his hometown and the Mt. Blue High girls’ program from 2014-2016. 

Seven State Championships along with a career record of 522-117 for an 82% winning percentage; these are legendary records that won’t be easily eclipsed. 

Moreover, Gavin’s coaching career continues today at the University of Maine at Presque Isle where he is the head coach of the Lady Owls. His enthusiasm for the game hasn’t diminished and this Hall of Fame coach has plenty left to give to the game of basketball. 

Gavin is a member of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame, inducted in 2013.

He resides in Presque Isle and is the father of four; Carol, Connor, Caitlin, Chelsea.
