1980 Westbrook Blue Blazes

1980 Westbrook Blue Blazes
In the incredible four year run of the ladies from Westbrook High School, it would be appropriate to honor any of those consecutive State Championship teams. The committee has chosen to honor the 1980 squad led by players like two All-State first team members Lisa Blais and Gail Jackson as well as outstanding player Nancy Anthony. The Lady Blazes cruised through the season in the competitive S.M.A.A. conference as well as epic battles with class B power Gorham High School. This group of ladies, led by coach Archie Manoogian, enjoyed size, shooting, and depth. They capped off their third consecutive Gold Ball with a twenty- point victory over Old Town High School in the State Championship game.
On this special day for his team, it is important to speak of Coach Manoogian who passed away in 2013. Archie was a positive influence in the lives of hundreds of young people, whether under his direct tutelage or simply during a game of pick-up basketball. Archie’s calm and steady leadership as well as his genuine affection for his players had a lasting impact on all his girls. Today, nearly forty years later, they view coach Manoogian as their second father, Archie’s most enduring athletic achievement was coaching the Westbrook girls’ basketball team to four straight State Championships from 1978-1981, including a 76 game winning streak.
